Baking Blunder

As I've mentioned before, I rarely bake.  I would be happy to practice my hand at baking and eat give away  my homemade goodies, but David is one husband who prefers not to have cookies in the oven.  I get it; we don't have a lot of money to spend on luxuries and it's good to watch the sugar intake (I guess...).

Now you don't need to worry about us dying from lack of sweets.  Thankfully we get to partake in some yumminess most every weekend when we see one of our parents.  And we do keep sugar-free popsicles on hand, and occasionally dig into our bag of mini chocolate baking chips that are supposed to be saved for putting in pancakes.  So in these ways, my sweet tooth is satisfied (for a while...)

Luckily when we have guests for dinner, I get to twist David's arm to let me serve a treat!  I often serve ice cream since it's the only time I get any, plus it's enough of a stressor making dinner for a group, let alone a dessert, too.

A couple of weeks ago we had the missionaries over for dinner.  I made a huge pot of chili, along with some corn muffins.  I decided to make scrumptious triple chunk brownies for dessert.  David had to pick up the missionaries on his way home from work, which meant that I had to (on my own) have an immaculately clean house and a dinner that was ready to be served by the time they made it to our house, since they had another appointment.  Those tasks were challenging enough, but then added to the mix was a super cranky toddler who hadn't napped that day and just wanted to be held.  When David called and told me they were on their way to our house, I asked him to please take a little detour to give me 20 extra minutes (as at that point the kitchen--where we eat--was a disaster and I wasn't even dressed).  He kindly did just that, so that by the time they walked in the door everything looked perfect and I had a minute to catch my breath.  : )

Of course I should have known that something just had to go wrong, with all of the mad dashing that I took part in before their arrival.  A second after they arrived, I smelled something burning.  I made the brownies while I was cooking the chili, and when they were finally done baking (they always seem to need way more time than it calls for), I took them out and placed them on the stove.  Back to the burning smell... I went over to the oven and checked everything, only to then realize that I had left one of the burners on from when I browned the beef, and had set my delicious brownies right on top of that burner.  The heat broke the brownie pan (which was actually my beloved corningware that I use all the time.)

Here was the casualty--

What a funny shape, huh?  I thought my mouth-watering brownies that I had greatly anticipated were goners (they weren't!  Most of them were still really good with just a hint of a burned bottom), but luckily I had bought ice cream to go with the brownies so those poor missionaries didn't have to leave without getting a treat.

While I am still mourning the loss of my beloved corningware, it wasn't so bad eating a whole batch of brownies on our own.  ; )
