Eli has no shortage of friends! He LOVES time with his buddies! This year he became best friends with our neighbor, Benjamin. Benjamin lived down the road (at our bus stop) and was also in 1st grade (in a different class). They moved here in October and he and Eli became fast friends. They sat together on the bus, played together at recess, and Eli always picked him to eat with us when I came to have lunch with him. Benjamin (and our other neighbor, Sam, started coming over to play after school almost every day. The boys were always good at coming up with creative fun! Then the last 6 weeks of school I started watching Benjamin every morning before school, as his mom had to start working (I just offered it as a service, as their finances were tight). So those boys got LOTS of play time together (sometimes TOO much)! Sadly Benjamin and his sweet family had to move away at the end of the school year. So sad to lose your first best friend! He will for sure be missed!
The above picture was taken right before Benjamin and his family drove off in their moving truck. David was able to help with their move and I brought them dinner. I also gave them a copy of the Book of Mormon with my testimony in it. I had talked about religion with Benjamin's mom, Alicia, several times. They are such a sweet family. Wish they could have stayed!
We thankfully had another gorgeous day for the bike-to-school ride!
Eli and David also participated in the Father/Son camp-out with the ward from church. It unfortunately occurred on a VERY rainy night. It heavily rained pretty much the entire time they were there. David doesn't care much for camping to begin with, so boy was he not happy to get to go camping in the rain! But Eli LOVES that kind of stuff. It means so much to him, so David bucked up and was a real trooper to take him. They actually slept in the car, since David did not want to set up a tent in the rain, ha!
All of the first-graders went on a field trip to the zoo! Since we are members, David took the day off work, and he and I and the little kids met the buses there to be able to join in the fun! Eli's group of four boys actually wanted to move through things at a different pace than Clara and Ezra, so we ended up not sticking together. But we'd run into him here and there and met up with him for lunch, so that was still good to check in with him and know that things were going well. Sadly we didn't get any pictures of Eli!
During the next-to-last week of school, Eli got to participate in the fan-favorite Field Day! Sooo many awesome activities took place, such as an Amazing Race, Balloon Pop, Dunk Tank, etc. The first graders were to attend the festivities in the afternoon over Ezra's naptime, but I still signed up to help with two events for a short time, and had planned to come eat the cookout lunch with him beforehand. Unfortunately Ezra became sick and I couldn't go at all. :( I was SO bummed to miss seeing Eli play everything. He sure had a blast!
For the last week of school the first-graders joined in Camp Learn-a-Lot! They were told to bring their sleeping bags, flashlights, and some favorite books (Eli brought a whole bag full). Every day they had Mail Call, so parents were asked to write a letter for each day that the kids could open, then they wrote back to us. They did different things each day, crafts, cheers, athletic activities, etc, and also got to eat yummy things like s'mores and ice cream sandwiches. He LOVED it! Sadly he missed the first day of it due to sickness. The second day I sent him to school because he seemed able but when he got home I checked him and he had a fever. :( His sickness was fever and a rough cough. At the end of the week he brought a picture home that was him with his class during the camp. He looked SO miserable in the picture. I feel terrible that he was having to be there doing it when he felt so awful! But otherwise I thought the camp was so fun and creative, and a great way to cap off the year!
And now school is complete and Eli is officially a 2nd grader! 😲
