Tricycle Race

Every year on the first Saturday of October, our town has a Derby Car Race.  This year Eli really got it into his head that he wanted to build a car and be in the race.  Well it turns out it's for 8 years and older, but in my research I learned that there is a tricycle race for kids under 8 that's held right before the derby car race.  I entered Eli into it and he was beyond excited for the big event.  He practiced riding his Big Wheel around the neighborhood many times and was itching for October 1st to arrive.

The first weekend of October is also General Conference for our church, so we invited G & G Hayes over to watch Conference with us and attend the race.  The weather was perfect that day, and thankfully we arrived to the race check-in on time.  However, Eli's Big Wheel bit the dust before the race began.  Earlier that week David had glued his broken pedal back together, but it was clear that it was inclined to break again if Eli rode it.  So quick as lightning I ran back to our car, sped home, grabbed his regular trike, and sped and ran to get it to Eli before the race began.  We were all pretty bummed to have to make this bike switch, as the trike was quite a bit slower than the Big Wheel, but we kept our attitudes high.

There were 30 kids in the tricycle race so they broke up into different groups.  Eli's went first.  He pedaled faster than his trike could keep up and the wheels spun.  He did a fantastic job, but it was hard to not feel sad when a few kids passed him up.  He totally would have won the race with his Big Wheel (we didn't tell him that).
All lined up and ready to ride!
Full speed ahead!
The participants all received medals.  Eli was SO proud of his medal.  He showed it to family, friends, neighbors, his bus driver, his teacher, and any stranger he could find.  :)
We stayed and watched the derby car race.  It was my first time to see it and it was pretty neat!  Some fun designs.  It was especially exciting to watch two cars neck and neck and the runners to pop out at the last minute and quickly race each other to take the win.

There just happened to be a Fall Festival at the local Friends church right next to where the race was.  They had a bounce house and bounce slide and weren't charging to play on it!  I took Ezra home to cook dinner while the rest of the crew stayed to play a bit longer.

Clara was too nervous to slide down by herself, so a nice older girl offered to take her down.  They went many times over!

We love our city!
